Set in Cuba about 100 years ago or so, ORIGINAL SIN is based on author Cornell Woolrich’s novel WALTZ INTO DARKNESS, which was originally set in New Orleans. Part psychological thriller and gothic romance, ORIGINAL SIN brings together two mysterious and exotic stars, Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie, to re-create a lurid tale of passion, betrayal, murder, and love. (RoRoRo, AbAb, C, Co, AP, LL, VVV, SSS, NN, A, D, MM) Strong romantic worldview that rejects redemption in favor of lust & moral ambiguity, with redemptive, Christian elements that ultimately lead nowhere, & some Communist, anti-American elements 5 obscenities & 6 profanities one very disturbing scene of somewhat violent sexual violation, plus other, slightly milder violent scenes such as woman poisons man, two shootings, several men beat up another man for cheating at cards, implied gang rape, & man flirts with suicide graphic open-mouthed kissing, implied adultery, one depicted scene of somewhat violent sexual violation, implied gang rape after woman & husband caught cheating at cards, implied marital intercourse, & one extended scene of nude married couple making love several scenes of upper & rear nudity, including scenes where people go to or visit a house of prostitution alcohol use smoking and, lust, prostitution, betrayal rebuked, lying, stealing rebuked, gambling, cheating at cards, deceit, violent threats, & intimidation ultimately rebuked. ORIGINAL SIN also contains other sexual references, much nudity and an anti-colonialism, Marxist, anti-American subtext theme. Regrettably, thus, ORIGINAL SIN has three of the most graphic sex scenes in a major studio release in recent memory and an ending that rejects redemption in favor of lust and moral ambiguity. What doesn’t quite work is the movie’s frantic ending and final scenes, which are morally confused and anti-climactic. Holding it together are the good performances by the two leads, who clearly have strong chemistry together and a strong screen presence individually. ORIGINAL SIN retains viewers’ attentions, up to a point. Surprisingly for him, Luis falls madly in love with Julia, but she turns out to have a dark, hidden life that threatens to destroy both of them.
